George Mikan -- RIP

From today's NYT:

"Of all the tributes paid to George Mikan during his career, perhaps the grandest was on the marquee outside the old Madison Square Garden. It read :

WED BASKETBALL

VS. KNICKS"

A Secret Well Kept

You are 91 years old and you've managed to keep one of the most well known secrets for 30 years. For that kudos. Think of how many publicity-hungry politicos have basked in decades of speculation that they were the source. If you are Mr. Felt, how did that make you feel? You took the risks and made the tough choices, all the while others cash in on rumor, speculation and innuendo that they were you. That puts the cost of keeping silent into a new perspective.

The real story is not being reported. In this age of incessant, instant news, I don't think we will ever see a 30 year secret source again. Million dollar book deals, speaking tours and the relentless prying of the media simply won't allow it to happen.

I think it would have been fitting for the Washington Post to have disclosed the source only upon his death, which was their original deal. I think they were too hasty yesterday. I guess they too were thinking of the ancilliary revenue opportunities.
